Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: NE Wind Stength: 8kts Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 15 kts (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 13nm (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Having cancelled all planned camping trips in MH for July / August/ Sept
for Dorset and Norfolk, going out daily has taken its toll on the other
half, so was pleased to get a free day at Bradfield with a 14kt forecast,
but on arrival at 1 ish, there was loads of sun and peeps but probably only
8kts. Lots of chat about foils and seeing 2 go out floundering didn't bode
well for my 102kgs!
I had to switch the Slingshot 76 front foil to the 84cm for more lift with
the larger rear wing and that took ages as the 76 jammed on the fuselage. I
also stripped the foil threaded insert, so knew I was going to have a mare
day.
The wind did freshen to 12 kts on launch but Keith was desperate to try a
foil before taking the plunge, so gave him my board. Lol he was 45 mins
trying to get back up wind, and he said it took off a couple of times,
which was scary! Think he will get one, but now understand why heavy
weights like us must have a board you can uphaul easy! No way can he uphaul
his slalom bd in rough waters. lesson learnt. Buy the proper kit.
There were a few gusts so I flew over towards Wrabness where the regulars
were but the wind was light. I did pump on a few gusts for a decent workout
but to be honest was boiling in my 3mm suit, so just chilled until there
was enough wind. Saw Neil and Ian having good flights. Raced Jim to
Wrabness on a gust and despite me pointing as high as I could with both
feet in the straps he went at least 10 degrees higher and ripped me
apart..gutted.
I didn't fall in today for the first time, although it wasn't windy, but I
can now foil and recover from most breaches or slam downs. Interestingly
the mast base slipped to the forward position, and the board refuse to fly.
I thought I was dragging weed! Stopped on the far side to check and noticed
it was the foot. I have it all the way back, and sure enough flew off in
the first gusts, which shows how critical my body weight an using mis
-match kit have to be set up everytime depending on the wind conditions.
Not a bad day, watch showed 3 hrs active time burning 2k calories. A 3hr
bike ride is 3K calories for me so cardio wise much better biking. Foiling
is a lot less effort, unless you pump a lot. Loads of foilers out having a
good time and light weights were flying a lot.
Will switch to Starboard board and foils next year if any decent deals come
up. A SB 177 / 150 freeride with the large super cruiser foil fitted would
be ideal. I just missed out on DC’s old 177 so hope another turns up.
3 stars for the foiling, but another for a scorching 30+ degrees summers
day with loads swimming in the river Stour. Looks clean enough as well.
